My opinion on this is, most likely, the consequence of recalling what the presidency and the White House once were. I have a few vague, early memories of the closing years of the Truman presidency and many vivid ones of the entire eight years of Eisenhower, and my assumptions about the way a president should behave and how the White House should be used originate from that time. A president was, above all, a gentleman, both in his private and public life, and the house that he occupied for one or two terms was no ordinary dwelling with which he could do whatever he wished. Rather, it was a place that carried with it something of the history of the nation, in the best and worst of times, and, as such, allowed for uses that were appropriate and decorous. Now, leaving aside the shameful carnal, but sotto tavola escapades of two of the twelve successors to Eisenhower, this standard only really broke down during the last two administrations, first with the sordid LGBQT+ public events hosted by the Bidens and now with the vulgar UFC fight organized by Trump. In the case of Trump, this event is just the latest expression of a more general philistinism, which is manifested in everything from ruining the restrained symmetry, light proportions, and balanced neoclassicism of the Federalist Oval Office by affixing golden wall medallions/appliques to its walls; to the destruction and replacement of the West Wing with a gigantic ballroom, which, although classical in design, is more than one and a half times larger than the White House itself. Granted that such a ballroom is needed, this decision to forever alter the historical architecture of the White House was taken in a cavalier manner, without proper public discussion of the design itself and of alternative sites for its construction. *
