Who Nominated Amy ‘Conehead’ Barrett?

Trump demands an investigation. 'Conehead' is my coinage. It has two meanings. They are for me to know and you to guess.

LOL at the last paragraph: “At publishing time, Trump had also ordered an investigation into who decided to plunge North America into a trade war by threatening to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico.”

    Dmitri,
But that is not why I linked to the Bab Bee. I support the tariffs even though prices will probably rise in the short term. The short-sighted Dems will whine and throw tantrums over higher prices and the the downward adjustment of an overheated stock market while ignoring the billions saved by DOGE.
Trump, like the ChiComs, is playing the long game.
The national debt is unsustainable, and he alone has the cojones to do anything about it.

I understand Bill. I responded to the paragraph that drew my attention. About tariffs and spitting your most reliable allies in the face — allow me to disagree.
Bullying in international relations is not something sovereign countries will agree to. I am about to oversimplify a bit but: Trump will get it the hard way — there will be new alliances and the US will not win the trade war against the Commonwealth and Europe and Mexico united.
Everybody knows that Trump is a businessman who does not want actual war, so nobody is afraid of US militarily. His ego mania will lead to a quick explosion between him and Musk (and less powerful other tech bros). And nothing will work with Putin who has an agenda and people who are behind this agenda and can live in dirt and poverty for years while a large percentage of their country dies in the battlefield (Germany of Hitler and France of Napoleon saw this happening and learned their lessons for now).
Trump is overplaying his hand and it is really dangerous. Probably still better than the mindless leftist Dems, but one has to know the limits of power and be respectful with allies. Disrespectful bullying, coupled with trash talking worthy of a high school delinquent, causes contempt and provokes responses that nobody wants to see in their lifetime.

Thanks for the trenchant response, Dmitri. Your analysis is plausible.
Trump has a huge ego, no doubt, and he may well be overplaying his hand. I fear that he is and that hubris will bring him down. His narrow escapes may have contributed to his conceit that he is literally bulletproof and under divine protection — a conceit aided and abetted by otherwise astute commentators who irresponsibly claim that his survival of the two assassination attempts is literally a miracle. (How could they know that?)
On the other hand, the Republic was hanging by a thread until he came along, and he is the only hope for America and, indirectly for the world. He has done wonderful things already. Go through his EOs and see if you don’t agree with most of them.
What are the options for people like ourselves? There are three main options. Support the demented Dems and acquiesce in the collapse of the Republic. Support Trump & Co. Withdraw from the fray entirely.
The third option is not unreasonable. How reasonable will depend on your age and other related factors.

Trump’s tariff policies are bad if they are some sort of neo-Mercantilism, destructive of free trade and international relations. I don’t believe they are. His efforts are towards a re-calibration of international trade towards a freer and fairer system that takes account of both the benefits of the American market that other nations have been taking advantage of without allowing reciprocal benefits and also of the need to protect a de minimis economic infrastructure that the US (and any country) needs to preserve its own national cohesion.
I do not think that ascribing his policies to an overbearing ego and narcissism squares with either his decades of rhetoric or current actions on tariffs.

But on to your more important question: I think your “Conehead” reference invokes the notion that Ms. Barrett is some sort of extraterrestrial alien (SNL) pretending to be a Supreme Court Justice and also that she wears a dunce cap.

    Tom T.,
Yes, I was thinking of the dunce cap. Years ago I heard that ‘dunce’ is from ‘Duns’ Scotus. Sound unlikely to me. Ever hear that?
‘Conehead’ is also a reference to some sitcom that a girl in one of my classes circa 1978 was telling me about in which there were these characters call ‘coneheads.’ But I forgot what sitcom that was. I didn’t have a TV in those bachelor days.
Seriously, I am very disappointed with Justice Barrett. I reckon the Orange Man is as well.

I’ve never heard that. If dunce is derivative of Duns Scotus, I don’t get it. Why would a dummy be likened to that marvelous thinker – unless the person who made up the reference was a dunce?
I am sure your girl was referring to the Conehead series of sketches on Saturday Night Live, with Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtain playing extraterrestrials with big, bald coneheads masquerading as an American suburban family. That was back when things on TV were genuinely funny. Whenever anyone remarked on their strangeness, Akroyd responded with an explanation that would satisfy most Americans: “We’re from France.”
    Ditto on Barrett.

You’re right, Tom. It wasn’t a sitcom but SNL. I didn’t have a TV then so never saw SNL. But I had a girlfriend who called me Mr. Bill. I was less impressed by the moniker when I learned who Mr. Bill was on SNL.
I’d call Darci on the phone and she’d yell to her sister, “It’s Mr. Bill!” Laughter would ensue.
