Footnotes to Plato from the foothills of the Superstition Mountains

Rockland County to NYC

A massive middle-fingered 'salute.'

Quite rightly. ('Quite rightly' is in my head because I heard Donovan's Mellow Yellow on the way to the range Friday morning. Donovan uses 'quite' to mean entirely, but in American English at least it also can mean somewhat.  Does it have both senses in British English?)

The article mentions 'migrants.'  Conservatives should not acquiesce in leftist-prog-'woke' language abuse. There are two distinctions here that ought to be respected: illegal-legal; immigrant-emigrant.

'Migrant' manages to elide both distinctions in one fell swoop. Par for the course for a leftist journo. But dumb is the conservative journalist who plays along.

'lllegal immigrant' and illegal aliens' are the correct terms for what the article calls 'migrants.'

Language matters. It's a war. Subversion of language is the mother of all subversion. Don't let the 'mothers' get away with it.

"But no person is illegal!" But who ever said that any person was? (I can explain the point here if you need it explained. Better yet: you tell me what my point is in the combox.)

Well the person isn’t illegal, but their location certainly is. Clever subterfuge!

    Joe,
You didn’t express your thought accurately. Surely it is not NYC that is illegal, but the illegal alien’s being in NYC.
So I would say: it is not the person that is illegal, but the person’s action (illegal entry) and the person’s residency.
Now most lefties know this, but being the mendacious, hate-America scumbags that they are, they say something stupid: No human is illegal.
There is another important side to this. If a person is convicted of a felony, then thereafter thy are classified as a felon. But that is not to say that the person’s total reality is exhausted by his being a felon. A felon is not felonious from the top down, the bottom up, and side-to side, to put it metaphorically.
A fisherman is one who fishes. But no one’s total being is piscatorial.
A dandy is an well-dressed man well-dressed unto preciosity. But no dandy’s total being is sartorial.
And that reminds me of a song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wRHBLwpASw
And this, perhaps, is why the usefully idiotic leftists (as opposed to the positively evil drivers of the ideology) do not like such labels as ‘illegal alien.’ But that just shows how emotion-driven and squish-headed they are.

Yes, “quite” has the same two meanings here across the pond. In fact, I can say that I’m quite surprised that Donovan is well known in America (he was once known here as “The poor man’s Dylan”), but that I’m quite certain that the UK is being flooded with illegal immigrants.
Another corruption of language we get over here is that the left claim we have a duty to care for these asylum-seekers who turn up uninvited in small boats along our south coast. But the asylum they seek is an asylum from less successful economies and polities, which makes them economic migrants rather than the types of people for whom the asylum conventions were drawn up. And, of course, their first act in setting foot on British soil makes them criminals. Not to mention that if they are genuine asylum seekers, then the situation in the war-torn hell that is France is even worse than we are led to believe.

    Simon Neale,
    Thanks for the language report.
Donovan made quite a splash this side of the Pond with “Catch the Wind.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8hjEYTpwE8
I’m getting chills right now listening to it.
Joan Baez with her sister Mimi Farina do a great job with it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmEyb87NlQo
Here is Donovan singing with Baez:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAmSKkmZWZQ

You are quite/entirely right about the misuse of ‘asylum.’ Conservatives have no objection to granting political asylum to those truly in need of it. The West is collapsing.
