The Jews are doing the whole world a great favor.
    As always.
God bless them all, and keep them all safe.

Yes. They are defending civilization against anti-civilizational savages. There is just no moral equivalence between Jews and Muslims — not that every Muslim is a savage. I myself know moderate Muslims who are wonderful and productive people. But Islam is an inferior religion, the worst of the great religions, and downstream from it are an inferior culture and an inferior politics. Religion-culture-politics.
    More later.

A state may lawfully resort to the use of force only under three circumstances: in self-defense; in fulfillment of a treaty obligation; and if authorized by the U.N. Security Council, whose resolutions have the force of international law.
The U.N. Charter talks about self-defense in Article 51: “Nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations, until the Security Council has taken measures necessary to maintain international peace and security.”
The passage is controversial. Does it mean that a Member state may defend itself only “if an armed attack” has taken place? Must a state wait patiently until the enemy lands the first punch? And is self-defense really a temporary response until the Security Council wheels into action?
    Self-defense divides into two aspects:
Preemptive self-defense: the threat is real and present; an attack is imminent.
Preventive self-defense: the threat is distant and even speculative.
It would seem that an instance of preemptive self-defense can be justified under Article 51, but it would be hard to fit an act of preventive self-defense within its language.
A “realist” in international affairs puts all this aside. He’d say that states do what they must for self-preservation. Self-preservation overrides international law. There are instances in which prudence counsels striking first. The Israeli strike on Iran is one of them.

Nine Iranian nuclear scientists killed. Good. It is blindingly evident that Iran cannot be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/idf-names-9-iranian-nuclear-scientists-killed-in-simultaneous-opening-strikes-says-they-advanced-efforts-toward-bomb/
Israel, defending civilization, has the initiative. They must press it and destroy Iran’s oil refineries.

    Amen to all the above.

I wonder if Tucker Carlson is aware of the distinction between preventing the present Iranian regime from acquiring nukes and forcing the Iranians to adopt a Western form of gov’t. I am for the first, against the second.

    James,
The sentence you quote from article 51 is poorly formulated. It has no clear meaning.
Surely pre-emptive self-defense in the face of an imminent and credible existential threat is morally justified. Suppose a man tells me he will kill me and pulls out a gun and points it at me. But I outdraw him and pre-empt his attack by firing at him and perhaps even killing him. Surely what I have done is morally justified. Is the international case relevantly different? I don’t think so.
As for international law, I find it hard to take seriously. A legal formulation is not a law unless there is a credible enforcement mechanism. Does the U. N. have a credible enforcement mechanism?

“The Romans, foreseeing troubles, dealt with them at once, and, even to avoid a war, would not let them come to a head, for they knew that war is not to be avoided, but is only put off to the advantage of others.”

Applying Machiavelli’s point to the present: War to the death cannot be avoided with Khamenei’s Iran. So let’s get it it over with. Khamenei is stalling; he thinks he can survive the current Israeli onslaught, develop his nukes, and fight later.
So what DJT has to do is supply the Israelis with the bunker buster bombs and delivery systems (B-52s) to annihilate ALL of the infrastructure needed to develop the nukes. This can be expected to ignite a popular uprising against the clerical thugs.
DJT also ought to ‘greenlight’ the Israeli assassination of Khamenei. Why hasn’t he done so? I have some thoughts. What are yours?

If I were DJT I would publicly urge restraint, and privately give the green light.

This article nails it. Israel is saving civilization. They won’t get much thanks. Much historical perspective in this article:

This is a golden moment for the USA to re-establish our deterrence that Obama and Biden wrecked; all we would need would be to go on in with USA aircraft, and drop some really big bombs on the centrifuge sites, and on Kahmenei.
    Let’s establish a Pax Americana.
