Pope Benedict XVI answers the question in Jesus of Nazareth (pg 150-157). He begins by acknowledging that it appears the most “human of all the petitions”. I take him to mean that the petition appears to be solely about material goods. Pope Benedict XVI does not deny this aspect of the petition. He talks about the reason we say “our daily bread” and not my daily bread is because we are praying for the needs of others: “those who have abundance of bread are called to share”. He mentions how it is prayer for those who have renounced all worldly possessions to live in extreme poverty. That is the worldly interpretation. However, he points out that the Church Fathers are unanimous in their understanding of “daily bread” to mean the source and summit of Christian life: the Eucharist.
