{"id":9586,"date":"2012-07-03T15:15:30","date_gmt":"2012-07-03T15:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2012\/07\/03\/another-hiker-lost-in-the-superstitions\/"},"modified":"2012-07-03T15:15:30","modified_gmt":"2012-07-03T15:15:30","slug":"another-hiker-lost-in-the-superstitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2012\/07\/03\/another-hiker-lost-in-the-superstitions\/","title":{"rendered":"Another  Hiker Lost in the Superstitions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Do as I say, not&#0160;as I do.&#0160; Stay out of the rattlesnake infested inferno known as the Superstition Wilderness in summer!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">I often hike alone in the Killer Mountains in the summer.&#0160; But I observe the following precautions:&#0160; I hydrate throughly before leaving the house and carry at least a gallon of water and enough gear and food to get me through the night if that should prove necessary; I carry a whistle and bright bandannas to attach to my hiking staff&#0160;for signaling; and I stick to the itinerary that I leave with my wife, e.g., Black Mesa Loop, 9. 1 miles, out of First Water Trailhead, counterclockwise direction.&#0160; And of course I stay on the trail.&#0160; Don&#39;t go looking for the Lost Dutchman&#39;s gold.&#0160; There ain&#39;t no gold&#0160;in them thar hills, but you could easily fall down a mine shaft.&#0160; Naturally you must start&#0160;such a &#0160;hike at first light and be done with that ankle-busting 9 mile loop by about 10:00 AM.&#0160; Only a jackass with a death wish hikes in the middle of the day in these mountains in summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2010\/07\/another-strange-tale-of-the-superstitions.html\" target=\"_self\">Here<\/a> is a&#0160;tale of three Utah fools who died two summers ago near Yellow Peak near the Black Mesa trail.&#0160; <a href=\"http:\/\/superstitionmountaintomkollenborn.blogspot.com\/2012\/05\/gold-fever-contagious.html\" target=\"_self\">Here<\/a> is Tom Kollenborn&#39;s account of when and where and by whom the bodies were recovered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">At the moment, one Kenny Clark of Gilbert, AZ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/2012\/07\/03\/massive-search-under-way-for-missing-arizona-hiker-kenny-clark\/\" target=\"_self\">has been missing since Sunday<\/a> out of that same First Water T-head.&#0160; May the Lord have mercy on him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2009\/12\/how-to-roast-oneself-in-five-different-ways.html\" target=\"_self\">Here are my Five Ways<\/a> of roasting your ass to a crisp in the Sonoran desert in summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Up for a hike?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><strong>Addendum (7\/6):<\/strong>&#0160; Mr. Clark <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/community\/gilbert\/articles\/20120706gilbert-hiker-found-dead-superstitions-abrk.html\" target=\"_self\">was found dead this morning<\/a>, Friday, around 2 AM in Garden Valley about a mile and a half from the First Water trailhead where his car was parked.&#0160;&#0160; Well, at least he died with his boots on.&#0160; He was found off trail.&#0160; That was one mistake.&#0160; Stay on the trail!
