{"id":9367,"date":"2012-09-12T14:47:53","date_gmt":"2012-09-12T14:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2012\/09\/12\/the-constructive-curmudgeon\/"},"modified":"2012-09-12T14:47:53","modified_gmt":"2012-09-12T14:47:53","slug":"the-constructive-curmudgeon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2012\/09\/12\/the-constructive-curmudgeon\/","title":{"rendered":"The Constructive Curmudgeon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">I don&#39;t know whether he is an antediluvian and a bibliomaniac, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\/profile\/08766692378954258034\" target=\"_self\">Douglas Groothuis<\/a> is a&#0160;self-professed curmudgeon, albeit of a constructive stripe.&#0160;I am not persuaded by <a href=\"http:\/\/theconstructivecurmudgeon.blogspot.com\/2012\/08\/a-short-programmatic-argument-for.html\" target=\"_self\">his case for Biblical inerrancy<\/a>, but I find his political observations astute, as in <a href=\"http:\/\/theconstructivecurmudgeon.blogspot.com\/2012\/09\/eleven-items-of-infamy.html\" target=\"_self\">this list of reasons<\/a> not to vote for Obama.&#0160; Read the list!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">By the way, my opening sentence illustrates the principle that the antecedent of a pronoun need not come before&#0160; (in the order of reading) the pronoun of which it is the antecedent despite the following bit of <a href=\"http:\/\/grammar.quickanddirtytips.com\/pronouns-and-antecedents.aspx\" target=\"_self\">schoolmarmishness<\/a> from <em>Grammar Girl<\/em>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Our second antecedent problem is what\u2019s called \u201canticipatory reference,\u201d which Bryan Garner calls \u201cthe vice of referring to something that is yet to be mentioned (5),&quot; meaning that the writer puts the pronoun before the antecedent\u2014a no no.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">I say to hell with that.&#0160; I opened with a beautiful classy sentence.&#0160; Grammar Girl needs a good spanking not only for endorsing this stupid rule of the dumbed-down and inattentive but also for her use of &#39;no no&#39; baby talk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">I should rant more fully on pronouns, their antecedents, with an application to Obama&#39;s &quot;You didn&#39;t build that.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">I do have a fine rant <a href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2009\/08\/baby-talk-and-first-grade-english.html\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a> on baby talk and first-grade English.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#39;t know whether he is an antediluvian and a bibliomaniac, but Douglas Groothuis is a&#0160;self-professed curmudgeon, albeit of a constructive stripe.&#0160;I am not persuaded by his case for Biblical inerrancy, but I find his political observations astute, as in this list of reasons not to vote for Obama.&#0160; Read the list!
