{"id":8445,"date":"2013-10-07T12:49:59","date_gmt":"2013-10-07T12:49:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2013\/10\/07\/stephen-prothero-to-speak-at-arizona-state-university\/"},"modified":"2013-10-07T12:49:59","modified_gmt":"2013-10-07T12:49:59","slug":"stephen-prothero-to-speak-at-arizona-state-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2013\/10\/07\/stephen-prothero-to-speak-at-arizona-state-university\/","title":{"rendered":"Stephen &#8220;God is not One&#8221; Prothero to Speak at Arizona State University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Details <a href=\"https:\/\/clas.asu.edu\/god-not-one-lecture-stephen-prothero\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>.&#0160; What follows is an excerpt from a 2010 post:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"entry-header\">Religions: Problems, Solutions, Techniques<\/h3>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div class=\"entry-body\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\">Simplifying a four-part<br \/>\n&#0160;schema employed by Stephen Prothero in his <em>God Is Not One<\/em> (Harper,<br \/>\n2010, p. 14), I propose, in agreement with Prothero, that each religion can be<br \/>\nusefully seen as addressing itself to a <em>problem<\/em>; offering a<br \/>\n<em>solution<\/em> to the problem, a solution that also constitutes the<br \/>\nreligion&#39;s goal; and proposing a <em>technique<\/em> for solving the problem and<br \/>\nachieving the goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\">This post will consider five<br \/>\nreligions and how the simplified Prothero&#0160;schema applies to them.&#0160; <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\">For Christianity, the problem<br \/>\nis sin, the solution or goal is salvation, and the technique is some combination<br \/>\nof faith and good works. (14)&#0160; For Buddhism, the problem is suffering, the<br \/>\nsolution or goal is nirvana, and the technique for achieving nirvana is the<br \/>\nNoble Eightfold Path. (14)&#0160; Prothero&#39;s main purpose in his book is to stress the<br \/>\ndifferences between religions.&#0160; That is the point of the silly title, &quot;God is<br \/>\nNot One.&quot;&#0160; Obviously, God is one by definition; it is the <em>conceptions<\/em> of God<br \/>\nthat are various.&#0160; It is also a bad title because Prothero&#39;s topic is religion,<br \/>\nnot theism.&#0160; Buddhism, after all, is not a theistic religion.&#0160; But let that<br \/>\npass.&#0160; I can&#39;t fault the man for wanting to attract buyers with a catchy title,<br \/>\none reminiscent of Hitchens&#39; <em>God Is Not Great<\/em>.&#0160; The schema makes clear<br \/>\nthe differences between these two great religions:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\">Are Buddhists trying to<br \/>\nachieve salvation?&#0160; Of course not, since they do not even believe in sin.&#0160; Are<br \/>\nChristians trying to achieve nirvana?&#0160; No, since for them suffering isn&#39;t<br \/>\nsomething that must be overcome. (15)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\">If salvation is<br \/>\nsalvation from sin, then of course Prothero is right.&#0160; Sin is an offence against<br \/>\nGod, and in a religion with no God there can be no sin.&#0160; Nevertheless, I am a<br \/>\nbit uneasy with the starkness of Prothero&#39;s contrast.&#0160; The Buddhist too aims at<br \/>\na sort&#0160;of salvation, salvation from all-pervasive suffering.&#0160; To use &#39;salvation&#39;<br \/>\nso narrowly that it applies only to the Christian&#39;s religious goal obscures the<br \/>\ncommonality between the two great religions.&#0160; I should think that some<br \/>\nsoteriology or other is essential to every religion.&#0160;&#0160; A religion must show a<br \/>\nway out of our unsatisfactory predicament, and one is not religious unless one<br \/>\nperceives our life in this world as indeed a predicament, and one that is deeply<br \/>\nand fundamentally unsatisfactory, whatever the exact nature of the<br \/>\nsatisfactoriness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2010\/09\/religions-problems-solutions-techniques.html\" target=\"_self\">Read it all<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia;\">I also quote Prothero in <a href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2010\/09\/on-religious-pluralism-and-religious-tolerance.html\" target=\"_self\">On Religious Pluralism and Religious Tolerance<\/a> wherein I land some hard blows on Sam Harris.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<fieldset class=\"zemanta-related\">\n<legend class=\"zemanta-related-title\">Related articles<\/legend>\n<div class=\"zemanta-article-ul zemanta-article-ul-image\" style=\"margin: 0; padding: 0; overflow: hidden;\">\n<div class=\"zemanta-article-ul-li-image zemanta-article-ul-li\" style=\"padding: 0; background: none; list-style: none; display: block; float: left; vertical-align: top; text-align: left; width: 84px; font-size: 11px; margin: 2px 10px 10px 2px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2012\/10\/what-is-religion.html\" style=\"box-shadow: 0px 0px 4px #999; padding: 2px; display: block; border-radius: 2px; text-decoration: none;\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.zemanta.com\/116611792_80_80.jpg\" style=\"padding: 0; margin: 0; border: 0; display: block; width: 80px; max-width: 100%;\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2012\/10\/what-is-religion.html\" style=\"display: block; overflow: hidden; text-decoration: none; line-height: 12pt; height: 80px; padding: 5px 2px 0 2px;\" target=\"_blank\">What is Religion?
