Hayward<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">But the sound and fury against the Tea Party is a sideshow.&#0160; The second aspect of the current partisan divide reveals the real extremism in politics today, and it isn\u2019t to be found among Tea Partiers.&#0160; The complaint against the supposed \u201cextremism\u201d of the Tea Party is nowadays followed by a much more risible lament: that the very design of our government is to blame for \u201cgridlock\u201d and the increasing conflict between the two parties in Washington.&#0160; Supposedly serious people have written in the last couple weeks that Tea Partiers should be <a href=\"http:\/\/petitions.moveon.org\/sign\/arrest-and-try-house.fb40?source=c.fb&amp;r_by=6609567\">arrested and charged with treason or sedition<\/a> for causing the government shutdown.&#0160; More frequent are the calls for abolishing the Senate because of its equal representation of small states and out of frustration with the filibuster.&#0160; A couple of liberal pundits, like the usually more sober-minded Jacob Heilbrunn at the <em>National Interest<\/em>, have suggested <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/blog\/jacob-heilbrunn\/shutdown-washington-9158\">abolishing Congress<\/a> altogether.&#0160; And <em>New York Times <\/em>columnist Thomas \u201cChina-Is-Awesome\u201d Friedman periodically recycles his fantasy that we could be \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/09\/09\/opinion\/09friedman.html\">China for a day<\/a>\u201d so that his favorite authoritarian wish list could be imposed without our democratic consent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">This is not a brand new phenomenon.&#0160; Starting with Woodrow Wilson, \u201cprogressives\u201d (to use a name more accurate than \u201cliberal\u201d) have complained that our various mechanisms of \u201cchecks and balances\u201d prevent government from being more \u201ceffective.\u201d&#0160; This is just code for the liberal desire that its opposition should simply shut up, surrender, and submit to their rule unquestioned.&#0160; It is a liberalism that has grown too lazy to argue with\u2014or even tolerate\u2014opposition, which is what happens when you come to believe that you embody \u201cthe side of history.\u201d&#0160; This display of contempt for the institutions of democratic deliberation reveals today\u2019s progressives to be highly undemocratic\u2014and illiberal, too.&#0160; With their will to power checked as intended by our founders, the Left is letting out a primal scream.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<fieldset class=\"zemanta-related\">\n<legend class=\"zemanta-related-title\">Related articles<\/legend>\n<div class=\"zemanta-article-ul zemanta-article-ul-image\" style=\"margin: 0; padding: 0; overflow: hidden;\">\n<div class=\"zemanta-article-ul-li-image zemanta-article-ul-li\" style=\"padding: 0; background: none; list-style: none; display: block; float: left; vertical-align: top; text-align: left; width: 84px; font-size: 11px; margin: 2px 10px 10px 2px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2013\/01\/extremists.html\" style=\"box-shadow: 0px 0px 4px #999; padding: 2px; display: block; border-radius: 2px; text-decoration: none;\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.zemanta.com\/136999551_80_80.jpg\" style=\"padding: 0; margin: 0; border: 0; display: block; width: 80px; max-width: 100%;\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2013\/01\/extremists.html\" style=\"display: block; overflow: hidden; text-decoration: none; line-height: 12pt; height: 80px; padding: 5px 2px 0 2px;\" target=\"_blank\">Extremists<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"zemanta-article-ul-li-image zemanta-article-ul-li\" style=\"padding: 0; background: none; list-style: none; display: block; float: left; vertical-align: top; text-align: left; width: 84px; font-size: 11px; margin: 2px 10px 10px 2px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2013\/07\/i-too-was-once-a-democrat.html\" style=\"box-shadow: 0px 0px 4px #999; padding: 2px; display: block; border-radius: 2px; text-decoration: none;\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.zemanta.com\/184339134_80_80.jpg\" style=\"padding: 0; margin: 0; border: 0; display: block; width: 80px; max-width: 100%;\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2013\/07\/i-too-was-once-a-democrat.html\" style=\"display: block; overflow: hidden; text-decoration: none; line-height: 12pt; height: 80px; padding: 5px 2px 0 2px;\" target=\"_blank\">I Too Was Once a Democrat!<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/fieldset>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Steven F.
