Krauthammer became hooked on the game when he was 20<\/a> \u2014 he is now 60 \u2014 and visited a friend in Cambridge, Mass. He found his friend\u2019s roommate sitting with a chess set and an unfamiliar device.\t\t<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018What is that?\u2019 \u201d Krauthammer recalled, \u201cAnd he said, \u2018That is a chess clock.\u2019 I had just come in from the plane. It was 10 o\u2019clock at night, and I sat down to play and didn\u2019t get up until 5 in the morning. I had found something that I loved, and I was in deep trouble.\u201d\t\t<\/span><\/p>\n

Krauthammer has chess boards in his office and a \u201cchess room\u201d at home. For a while, he held a small, informal chess club every Monday; members included the liberal scourges Charles Murray (co-author of \u201cThe Bell Curve\u201d) and the writer Dinesh D\u2019Souza<\/a>. Krauthammer said they called it the Pariah Chess Club<\/a>.\t<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
