{"id":7954,"date":"2014-05-15T14:17:53","date_gmt":"2014-05-15T14:17:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2014\/05\/15\/the-illiberalism-of-contemporary-liberals\/"},"modified":"2014-05-15T14:17:53","modified_gmt":"2014-05-15T14:17:53","slug":"the-illiberalism-of-contemporary-liberals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2014\/05\/15\/the-illiberalism-of-contemporary-liberals\/","title":{"rendered":"The Illiberalism of Contemporary &#8216;Liberals&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/.a\/6a010535ce1cf6970c01a3fd09ac60970b-pi\" style=\"float: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kirsten\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a010535ce1cf6970c01a3fd09ac60970b img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/.a\/6a010535ce1cf6970c01a3fd09ac60970b-320wi\" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;\" title=\"Kirsten\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2014\/05\/14\/liberal-thought-police-lagarde-hgtv-benham-free-speech-column\/9098133\/\" target=\"_self\">Go Kirsten!<\/a>&#0160; Kirsten Powers has it all: beauty, brains, and the female equivalent of that which I was about to refer to using a word I decided not to use.&#0160; I think I&#39;m in love.&#0160; And she stands up to Bill O&#39;Reilly displaying grace under pressure when the pugnacious Irishman becomes obnoxious.&#0160; She&#39;s smarter than O&#39;Reilly and she knows it.&#0160; Bill does too.&#0160; But hats off to O&#39;Reilly&#0160; for giving the young whippersnappers a forum and for speaking truth to power lo these many years.&#0160; He is an inspiring profile in civil courage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">&quot;Speaking truth to power&quot; is a lefty phrase that we need to co-opt.&#0160; Leftards use the phrase even when they have power.&#0160; You see, for a lefty, having power is supposedly bad and so they have to pretend that they don&#39;t have it even when they do.&#0160; It&#39;s like money in that respect.&#0160; They like to posture that they are anti-Establishment when they are the Establishment, and that they are dissenting when they are spouting and toeing the party line.&#0160; They also think they somehow <a href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2009\/08\/does-the-left-own-dissent.html\" target=\"_self\">own dissent<\/a> as if conservatives are somehow barred by the very meaning of the word from dissenting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">In any case, Miss Powers really hits the nail on the head in her column:&#0160; Here is some of it and it ought to anger you with a righteous anger:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Don&#39;t bother trying to make sense of what beliefs are permitted and which ones will get you strung up in the town square. Our ideological overlords have created a minefield of inconsistency. While criticizing Islam is intolerant, insulting Christianity is sport. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2014\/04\/16\/liberals-islam-misogyny-hirsi-ali-war-women-column\/7782657\/\">Ayaan Hirsi Ali<\/a> is persona non grata at Brandeis University for attacking the prophet Mohammed. But Richard Dawkins <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/23651-the-god-of-the-old-testament-is-arguably-the-most\">describes<\/a> the Old Testament God as &quot;a misogynistic \u2026 sadomasochistic \u2026 malevolent bully&quot; and the mob yawns. Bill Maher calls the same God a &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2014\/mar\/15\/bill-maher-god-psychotic-mass-murderer-who-drowns-\/\">psychotic mass murderer<\/a>&quot; and there are no boycott demands of the high-profile liberals who traffic his HBO show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">The self-serving capriciousness is crazy. In March, University of California-Santa Barbara women&#39;s studies professor Mireille Miller-Young attacked a 16-year-old holding an anti-abortion sign in the campus&#39; &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2014\/mar\/26\/news\/la-ol-ucsb-professor-pro-life-demonstrator-trauma-trigger-censorship-20140325\">free speech zone<\/a>&quot; (formerly known as America). Though she was charged with theft, battery and vandalism, Miller-Young remains unrepentant and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.femst.ucsb.edu\/people\/academic\/mireille-miller-young\">still has her job<\/a>. But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2014\/04\/04\/mozilla-ceo-resignation-free-speech\/7328759\/\">Mozilla&#39;s Brendan Eich<\/a> gave a private donation to an anti-gay marriage initiative six years ago and was ordered to recant his beliefs. When he wouldn&#39;t, he was forced to resign from the company he helped found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Got that? A college educator with the right opinions can attack a high school student and keep her job. A corporate executive with the wrong opinions loses his for making a campaign donation. Something is very wrong here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">As the mob gleefully destroys people&#39;s lives, its members haven&#39;t stopped to ask themselves a basic question: What happens when they come for me? If history is any guide, that&#39;s how these things usually end.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Powers is a Dem.&#0160;
