{"id":7865,"date":"2014-06-30T12:13:50","date_gmt":"2014-06-30T12:13:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2014\/06\/30\/pew-research-center-political-typology-quiz\/"},"modified":"2014-06-30T12:13:50","modified_gmt":"2014-06-30T12:13:50","slug":"pew-research-center-political-typology-quiz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2014\/06\/30\/pew-research-center-political-typology-quiz\/","title":{"rendered":"Pew Research Center Political Typology Quiz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">I started to take <a href=\"http:\/\/www.people-press.org\/quiz\/political-typology\/\" target=\"_self\">the quiz<\/a> but then quit in disgust after the first two questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Here is the first question:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Which of the following statements <strong>comes closest<\/strong> to your view?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><label><input name=\"q1\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -3000px;\" type=\"radio\" value=\"1\" \/> Government regulation of business is necessary to protect the public interest<\/label>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><label><input name=\"q1\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -3000px;\" type=\"radio\" value=\"2\" \/> Government regulation of business usually does more harm than good<\/label>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">I would say that both statements are true.&#0160; That <em>some<\/em> government regulation is necessary is <em>obviously<\/em> true.&#0160; But that many types of regulation makes things worse is also the case, though it is not as obvious. What does it even <em>mean<\/em> to ask which of these comes closest to my view? The rational thing to do is reject the question as poorly defined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Here is the second question:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Which of the following statements <strong>comes closest<\/strong> to your view?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><label style=\"background: none repeat scroll 0% 0% #dddddd;\"><input name=\"q2\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -3000px;\" type=\"radio\" value=\"1\" \/> Most people who want to get ahead can make it if they&#39;re willing to work hard<\/label> <input name=\"q2\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -3000px;\" type=\"radio\" value=\"2\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Hard work and determination are no guarantee of success for most.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Again, both of these statements are true, at least in the USA at the present time.&#0160; The second statement is <em>obviously<\/em> true. &#0160; Success is not <em>guaranteed<\/em> for anyone.&#0160; You could be doing everything right and be killed by a drunk driver.&#0160; In every success there is some element of luck.&#0160; The first statement is not as clearly true, but it too is true.&#0160; Again, there is the problem of what &#39;comes closest&#39; even <em>means<\/em>.&#0160; I am a conservative and so you will expect me to plump for the first statement.&#0160; But the second is one that every sane person must accept.&#0160; So in one sense of &#39;closest&#39; the second is closest to my view.&#0160; In another sense, the first is closest, because it is more characteristic of my view.&#0160; A near-certainty that everyone must accept on pain of being irrational is not <em>characteristic<\/em> of any political view. <em>Capiche<\/em>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Not all of the question pairs display the faults of the first two.&#0160; They display others such as false alternative.&#0160; And a few, I grant, are well-formulated.&#0160; #20 for example:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Which of the following statements <strong>comes closest<\/strong> to your view?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><label><input name=\"q20\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -3000px;\" type=\"radio\" value=\"1\" \/> Our country has made the changes needed to give blacks equal rights with whites<\/label><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><label><input name=\"q20\" style=\"position: absolute; left: -3000px;\" type=\"radio\" value=\"2\" \/> Our country needs to continue making changes to give blacks equal rights with whites<\/label>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">These statements cannot both be true, and there is no false alternative: it must be that one of them is true.<\/span> <\/p>\n<fieldset class=\"zemanta-related\">\n<legend class=\"zemanta-related-title\">Related articles<\/legend>\n<div class=\"zemanta-article-ul zemanta-article-ul-image\" style=\"margin: 0; padding: 0; overflow: hidden;\">\n<div class=\"zemanta-article-ul-li-image zemanta-article-ul-li\" style=\"padding: 0; background: none; list-style: none; display: block; float: left; vertical-align: top; text-align: left; width: 84px; font-size: 11px; margin: 2px 10px 10px 2px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2013\/05\/psychological-projection-and-its-dangers.html\" style=\"box-shadow: 0px 0px 4px #999; padding: 2px; display: block; border-radius: 2px; text-decoration: none;\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.zemanta.com\/166475249_80_80.jpg\" style=\"padding: 0; margin: 0; border: 0; display: block; width: 80px; max-width: 100%;\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2013\/05\/psychological-projection-and-its-dangers.html\" style=\"display: block; overflow: hidden; text-decoration: none; line-height: 12pt; height: 80px; padding: 5px 2px 0 2px;\" target=\"_blank\">Psychological Projection and its Dangers<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/fieldset>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I started to take the quiz but then quit in disgust after the first two questions.
