Students at Lebanon Valley College (LVC) in Pennsylvania are demanding Lynch Memorial Hall on campus be renamed, due to the potential traces of racism associated with the word \u201clynch.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Michael Schroeder, an associate professor of history, said about LVC, \u201cWe\u2019re not an island but sometimes it feels like an island because it\u2019s such a rural and bucolic setting. But we\u2019re clearly caught up in the same currents that the rest of the country is.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Schroeder added he supports the goals of the students making the demands.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStudents here tend to be relatively quiescent, but this year there\u2019s a disproportionately large number of students of color and they\u2019re feeling marginalized and silenced,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The stupidity of the students making this ridiculous demand, though deplorable, is perhaps excusable, but not the abdication of authority on the part of the history professor.  The man is a despicable fool and probably a coward.  You don't acquiesce in a demand like this, you point out the obvious.  The name 'Lynch' is precisely a name and not a verb, and has nothing to do with lynching.  <\/span><\/p>\n

You point out that critical thinking, which is part of what should be taught in college, is not the association of ideas.  <\/span><\/p>\n

Does this fool think that Loretta Lynch, the present Attorney General of the U. S. should change her name?  Does he think she is a 'traitor to her race' for bearing this name?<\/span><\/p>\n

And then there is the utter incoherence of his final remark.  If there is a disproportionately large number of "students of color," how is it that they "feel marginalized and silenced"?<\/span><\/p>\n

As contemporary 'liberals' become ever more extreme, they increasingly assume what I will call the political burden of proof<\/em>.  The onus is now on them to defeat the presumption that they are so  morally and intellectually obtuse as not to be worth talking to.<\/span><\/p>\n
