Rossman was finishing a doctorate at Princeton, and his <a data-web-url=\"https:\/\/www.princeton.edu\/~artspol\/rossman.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.princeton.edu\/%7Eartspol\/rossman.html\">research<\/a> on how ownership affects mass-media content was a good fit for a school in the entertainment capital. He got the job as an assistant professor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">But he also got a warning about academic culture. At a dinner following his day on campus, two of his future colleagues started ranting about George W. Bush\u2019s re-election. One called it \u201ca referendum against the Enlightenment.\u201d Rossman smiled and nodded, never letting on that he\u2019d cast his ballot for Bush.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Rossman\u2019s story appears anonymously in &quot;<a data-web-url=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/passing-on-the-right-9780199863051?cc=us&amp;lang=en&amp;\" href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/passing-on-the-right-9780199863051?cc=us&amp;lang=en&amp;\">Passing on the Right: Conservative Professors in the Progressive University<\/a>,&quot; just published by Oxford University Press.
