{"id":5821,"date":"2017-01-29T10:18:34","date_gmt":"2017-01-29T10:18:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2017\/01\/29\/the-literary-trope-of-the-womens-march\/"},"modified":"2017-01-29T10:18:34","modified_gmt":"2017-01-29T10:18:34","slug":"the-literary-trope-of-the-womens-march","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2017\/01\/29\/the-literary-trope-of-the-womens-march\/","title":{"rendered":"The Literary\/Visual Trope of the Women&#8217;s March"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 11pt;\">I propose the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/synecdoche\">synecdoche<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 11pt;\">a figure of speech by which a part is put for the whole (as <em>fifty sail<\/em> for <em>fifty ships<\/em>), the whole for a part (as <em>society<\/em> for <em>high society<\/em>), the species for the genus (as <em>cutthroat<\/em> for <em>assassin<\/em>), the genus for the species (as <em>a creature<\/em> for <em>a man<\/em>), or the name of the material for the thing made (as <em>boards<\/em> for <em>stage<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 11pt;\"><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/.a\/6a010535ce1cf6970c01bb0972cea0970d-pi\" style=\"float: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Vaginas women&#39;s march\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a010535ce1cf6970c01bb0972cea0970d img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/.a\/6a010535ce1cf6970c01bb0972cea0970d-320wi\" style=\"margin: 0px 5px 5px 0px;\" title=\"Vaginas women&#39;s march\" \/><\/a>People who refer to women using &#39;vagina&#39; or, more commonly, &#0160;its obscene equivalents are employing the literary device known as the synecdoche. &#0160;To refer to women as skirts, however, is not a synecdoche but a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/metonymy\">metonym<\/a>. &#0160;The graphic is an example of a <em>visual<\/em> synecdoche.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 11pt;\">Time was, when feminists protested the objectification of women, and rightly so.
