One of the most basic is to use words and phrases in their commonly accepted senses and to refrain from distorting them for partisan purposes.&#0160; Take &#39;chain migration.&#39; According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chain_migration\">Wikipedia<\/a>, a usually reliable source,&#0160;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 11pt;\"><strong>Chain migration<\/strong>&#0160;is a term used by demographers since the 1960s<sup class=\"reference\" id=\"cite_ref-MacDonald_1-0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chain_migration#cite_note-MacDonald-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&#0160;to refer to the social process by which migrants from a particular town follow others from that town to a particular destination city or neighborhood. The destination may be in another country or in a new, usually urban, location within the same country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 11pt;\">Chain migration can be defined as a \u201cmovement in which prospective migrants learn of opportunities, are provided with transportation, and have initial accommodation and employment arranged by means of primary social relationships with previous migrants.\u201d<sup class=\"reference\" id=\"cite_ref-MacDonald_1-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chain_migration#cite_note-MacDonald-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&#0160;Or, more simply put: &quot;The dynamic underlying &#39;chain migration&#39; is so simple that it sounds like common sense: People are more likely to move to where people they know live, and each new immigrant makes people&#0160;<em>they<\/em>&#0160;know more likely to move there in turn.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 11pt;\">As you can see, &#39;chain migration&#39; is a phrase that has been in use for a long time. It is no more a racist slur than &#39;black hole&#39; is.&#0160; Why then does Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D NY) <a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/politics\/gillibrand-chain-migration-phrase-racist-slur\/\">say it is<\/a>?&#0160; You know the answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 11pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2018\/01\/31\/chain-migration-racist-term-no-its-just-you-democrats-jonah-goldberg-column\/1079100001\/\">Jonah Goldberg<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 11pt;\">A more recent example comes in the novel claim that the term \u201cchain migration\u201d is a racist shibboleth. Chain migration is \u2014&#0160;or was \u2014&#0160;an utterly neutral term for the process by which legal immigrants sponsor members of their extended family to become citizens as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 11pt;\">Rep Chris Murphy,&#0160;D-Conn.,&#0160;tweeted recently, \u201cReminder: \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chrismurphyct\/status\/957363116291121153\">chain&#0160;migration<\/a>\u2019 is a made-up term by the hard-line anti-immigration crowd. Its purpose is to dehumanize immigrants. If you&#39;re using that word, you&#39;re declaring a side.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 11pt;\">Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi,&#0160;D-Calif.,&#0160;refuses to even use the phrase. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., insists the term \u2014&#0160;which he&#0160;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2018\/01\/15\/flashback_dick_durbin_uses_chain_migration_in_2010_called_trump_racist.html\">used as recently as 2010<\/a>&#0160;\u2014&#0160;is offensive&#0160;because&#0160;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2018\/01\/12\/sen_durbin_chain_migration_is_offensive_to_those_whose_ancestors_came_to_us_in_chains.html\">African Americans came here in chains<\/a>.&#0160;Sen. Brian Schatz,&#0160;D-Hawaii,&#0160;insists that &quot; &#39;chain migration&#39;&#0160;is an epithet. It was invented.&#0160;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brianschatz\/status\/956605748003459077\">The term is \u2018family immigration<\/a>,\u2019 and it\u2019s the way America has literally always worked.\u201d&#0160;Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.,&#0160;made a figurative clown of herself when she literally said, \u201cLet&#39;s be very clear: When someone uses the phrase &#39;chain migration,&#39; it is intentional in trying to demonize families, literally trying to&#0160;<a href=\"http:\/\/freebeacon.com\/politics\/gillibrand-chain-migration-phrase-racist-slur\/\">demonize families<\/a>&#0160;and make it a racist slur.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 11pt;\">This is just more evidence that our political opponents are not fellow citizens with whom we can have productive discussions. They are domestic enemies and we are in a war. You may not want to accept that. I didn&#39;t for a long time. But the fact is now unblinkable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 11pt;\">Don&#39;t imagine that you can reason with them. They will ignore what you say and go right back to the recitation of their defamatory litany: racist, white supremacist, xenophobe, . . . . You need to disembarrass yourself of the notion that they are basically decent people.
