{"id":378,"date":"2024-12-21T16:50:14","date_gmt":"2024-12-21T16:50:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2024\/12\/21\/saturday-night-at-the-oldies-billboard-top-ten-in-october-1963-at-the-height-of-the-profumo-affair\/"},"modified":"2024-12-21T16:50:14","modified_gmt":"2024-12-21T16:50:14","slug":"saturday-night-at-the-oldies-billboard-top-ten-in-october-1963-at-the-height-of-the-profumo-affair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2024\/12\/21\/saturday-night-at-the-oldies-billboard-top-ten-in-october-1963-at-the-height-of-the-profumo-affair\/","title":{"rendered":"Saturday Night at the Oldies: Billboard Top Ten in October, 1963 at the Height of the  Profumo Affair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Some of us are old enough to remember <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Profumo-affair\">John Profumo<\/a> and his entanglement with sex kitten Christine Keeler, which eventually lead to Prime Minister Harold Macmillan&#39;s resignation in October of 1963:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">At a party at the country estate of Lord Astor on July 8, 1961, British Secretary of State for War&#0160;<a class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/John-Profumo\">John Profumo<\/a>, then a rising 46-year-old&#0160;<a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw\" data-term=\"Conservative\" data-type=\"MW\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/Conservative\">Conservative<\/a>&#0160;Party politician, was introduced to 19-year-old London dancer&#0160;<a class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Christine-Keeler\">Christine Keeler<\/a>&#0160;by&#0160;Stephen Ward, an osteopath with contacts in both the&#0160;<a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw\" data-term=\"aristocracy\" data-type=\"MW\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/aristocracy\">aristocracy<\/a>&#0160;and the underworld. Also present at this gathering was a Russian military attach\u00e9,&#0160;Eugene (Yevgeny) Ivanov, who was Keeler\u2019s lover. Through Ward\u2019s influence, Profumo began an affair with Keeler, and rumours of their involvement soon began to spread. In March 1963 Profumo lied about the affair to Parliament, stating that there was \u201cno impropriety whatsoever\u201d in his relationship with Keeler. Evidence to the contrary quickly became too great to hide, however, and 10 weeks later Profumo resigned, admitting \u201cwith deep remorse\u201d that he had deceived the&#0160;<a class=\"md-crosslink autoxref \" data-show-preview=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/House-of-Commons-British-government\">House of Commons<\/a>. Prime Minister Macmillan continued in office until October, but the scandal was pivotal in his eventual downfall, and within a year the opposition&#0160;<a class=\"md-crosslink \" data-show-preview=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Labour-Party-political-party\">Labour Party<\/a>&#0160;defeated the&#0160;<a class=\"md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw\" data-term=\"Conservatives\" data-type=\"MW\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/Conservatives\">Conservatives<\/a>&#0160;in a national election.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Seven made top ten in October of &#39;63, but I only like six.&#0160; Here they are:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Ray Charles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RhzSallqb-w\">Busted<\/a>. &quot;I&#39;m broke, no bread, I mean like nothin&#39;, forget it.&quot;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Roy Orbison, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-kWZZ71yzas\">Mean Woman Blues<\/a>. A great live version featuring the great James Burton and his Telecaster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Dion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FzvgrDZqrZY\">Donna the Prima Donna<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">April Stevens and Nino Tempo, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MCv3Uw2dvNg\">Deep Purple<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" class=\"firstinpost\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">I liked this number when it first came out, and I&#39;ve enjoyed it ever since. A while back I happened to hear it via Sirius satellite radio and was drawn into it like never before. But its lyrics, penned by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mitchell_Parish\">Mitchell Parish<\/a>, are pure sweet kitsch:&#0160;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"hidden\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 13pt;\">When the deep purple falls over sleepy garden walls<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 13pt;\">And the stars begin to twinkle in the night<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 13pt;\">Through the mist of a memory you wander back to me<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 13pt;\">Breathing my name with a sigh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 13pt;\">&#0160;In the still of the night once again I hold you tight<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 13pt;\">Though you&#39;re gone, your love lives on when moonlight beams<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 13pt;\">And as long as my heart will beat, sweet lover we&#39;ll always meet<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 13pt;\">Here in my deep purple dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\" class=\"hidden\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Kitsch is bad art, but what is the essence of kitsch, and why is it bad? Presumably it is sentimentality that makes kitsch kitsch, and it is this sentimentality that makes kitsch aesthetically and perhaps even morally dubious. One self-indulgently &#39;wallows&#39; in a song like this, giving into its &#39;cheap&#39; emotions. The emotions are &#39;false&#39; and &#39;faked.&#39; The melody and lyrics are formulaic and predictable, &#39;catchy.&#39; The listener allows himself to be manipulated by the songwriter who is out to &#39;push the listener&#39;s buttons.&#39; The aesthetic experience is not authentic but vicarious. And so on. Theodor Adorno would not approve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" class=\"hidden\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">There is great art and there is kitsch. I partake of both, enjoy both, and know the difference. What is wrong with a little kitsch in moderation? No, I don&#39;t collect Hummel figurines and my stoa is not carpeted with astroturf. What is sentimentality and what is wrong with it? There is a literature on this, but I&#39;ve read almost none of it. Who has time?&#0160;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Peter, Paul, and Mary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1y_ZLGGeoIk\">Don&#39;t Think Twice, It&#39;s All Right<\/a>. There have been countless covers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1iHhWh9FtsQ\">The original<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" class=\"hidden\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">This brings me to Bob Dylan who was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature. &#0160;Now I&#39;ve been a Dylan fan from the early &#39;60s. &#0160;In the &#39;60s &#0160;I was more than a fan; I was a fanatic who would brook no criticism of his hero. &#0160;And I still maintain that in the annals of American popular music no one surpasses him as a songwriter. &#0160;<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" class=\"hidden\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">But the Nobel Prize for Literature? &#0160;That&#39;s a bit much, and an ominous foreshadowing of the death of the book and of quiet reading in this hyperkinetic age of tweets and sound bites. &#0160;A large theme. &#0160;Get to it conservative bloggers. &#0160;Why do I have to do all the work?<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" class=\"hidden\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Dylan&#39;s most sentimental song? &#0160;I don&#39;t know, but&#0160;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=P1fSVbBwVX8\">Forever Young<\/a>&#0160;is in serious contention. &#0160;<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\" class=\"hidden\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">A long, long way from&#0160;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_CJHbfkROow\">It&#39;s Alright Ma, I&#39;m Only Bleeding<\/a>&#0160;and&#0160;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kqA-RTOBNLY\">Visions of Johanna<\/a>&#0160;(Marianne Faithful) and&#0160;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hUvcWXTIjcU\">Desolation Row<\/a>.&#0160;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AwuCF5lYqEE\">Here<\/a>&#0160;is the original of&#0160;<em>Visions of Johanna<\/em>.&#0160;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Village Stompers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lBOT6dfnerc\">Washington Square<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Back to Profumo and Keeler: Bob Seger, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=K7r-V1id038\">The Fire Down Below<\/a>.
