{"id":3383,"date":"2020-01-27T14:54:14","date_gmt":"2020-01-27T14:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2020\/01\/27\/clinical-depression-and-the-moral-permissibility-of-suicide\/"},"modified":"2020-01-27T14:54:14","modified_gmt":"2020-01-27T14:54:14","slug":"clinical-depression-and-the-moral-permissibility-of-suicide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2020\/01\/27\/clinical-depression-and-the-moral-permissibility-of-suicide\/","title":{"rendered":"Clinical Depression and the Moral Permissibility of Suicide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">I detect a <em>cri du coeur<\/em> in the following&#0160; question to me from a reader:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Do you believe it is&#0160;morally permissible for an unmarried person who is now middle-aged (late 40&#39;s) and who has&#0160;no children to care&#0160;for and who has battled clinical depression and anxiety for many years to commit suicide?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Since this is an &#39;existential&#39; and not merely a theoretical question, and because I want to treat it with the proper respect, I should say that while I have read about clinical depression, I would not call any of my bouts with anxiety and depression &#39;clinical.&#39; I&#0160; have successfully dealt with all of them on my own through prayer, meditation, Stoic and other spiritual disciplines, journal writing, vigorous physical exercise (running), and just toughing it out.&#0160; The classically American virtue of self-reliance, too little practiced these days, can sometimes see you through much better than drugs and hand-holding.&#0160; But I have been spared the hell I have read about in William Styron&#39;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Darkness-Visible-Madness-William-Styron\/dp\/0679736395\">Darkness Visible<\/a>, and more recently in the philosopher J. P. Moreland&#39;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Finding-Quiet-Overcoming-Anxiety-Practices\/dp\/031059720X?SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&amp;tag=duckduckgo-ffnt-20&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=2025&amp;creative=165953&amp;creativeASIN=031059720X\">Finding Quiet: My Story of Overcoming Anxiety and the Practices that Brought Me Peace<\/a>.&#0160;&#0160;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">I recommend Moreland&#39;s book to the reader and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/ct\/2019\/june\/jp-moreland-finding-quiet-anxious-apologist.html\">this interview<\/a> as an introduction thereto.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">To come directly at the question: any philosopher who proffers a confident answer to the question is either a fool or a blowhard. Being neither, I will say that I don&#39;t know.&#0160; I further believe that no one knows despite their asseverations to the contrary.
