{"id":3199,"date":"2020-04-10T13:36:17","date_gmt":"2020-04-10T13:36:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2020\/04\/10\/he-breathed-his-last\/"},"modified":"2020-04-10T13:36:17","modified_gmt":"2020-04-10T13:36:17","slug":"he-breathed-his-last","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2020\/04\/10\/he-breathed-his-last\/","title":{"rendered":"He Breathed His Last"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">If you have ever struggled with the one-person-two-natures doctrine, then you may be inclined to agree with <a href=\"https:\/\/trinities.org\/blog\/he-breathed-his-last\/\">Dale Tuggy<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Today is when we remember<strong> that terrible and wonderful day when our Savior willingly died for us<\/strong>, breathing his last.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">This whole time, <em>God <\/em>was not breathing at all. As a divine spirit, God lacks lungs, throat, mouth, and diaphragm. He lived on to witness the heroic death of his beloved Son, his Christ \u2013 and later (spoiler alert!) to raise Jesus back to life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Recent and ancient catholic traditions have created a lot of confusion about just <strong>who gave up his life<\/strong> on the cross. The gospel is not that God died for you; God is essentially immortal. Rather, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=romans+5&amp;version=NRSV\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the gospel is that <em>God\u2019s human Son<\/em> died for you<\/a>. It was one of us who atoned for the rest of us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Do you imagine that somehow <strong>Jesus having \u201ctwo natures\u201d<\/strong> can explain how he can die even while being the essentially immortal God? I invite you to think again \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/trinities.org\/blog\/podcast-145-tis-mystery-immortal-dies\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">such speculations just don\u2019t work out<\/a>. Think carefully through these things; don\u2019t just blindly repeat unclear and non-biblical language, e.g. Jesus \u201cdied in his human nature\u201d but \u201clived in his divine nature.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Let\u2019s celebrate this wonderful event without muddying the waters; the New Testament is very explicit that God is immortal, and also that his human Son died for us.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">That a man should be raised from the dead by the power of God is a miracle, but it involves no conceptual incoherence or logical contradiction that I can see. It is of course incompatible with metaphysical naturalism and its epistemology, scientism, but it is no affront to the discursive intellect.&#0160; Chalcedonian orthodoxy is. To this extent I agree with my friend Tuggy.&#0160; The fancy footwork that is used to show that Chaldedonian orthodoxy is logically in the clear convinces neither of us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">But how seriously should we take affronts to the discursive intellect in theological matters?&#0160; &#0160;One might attempt a mysterian move in support of the two-natures doctrine.&#0160; Tuggy will of course balk.
