For some time now, I have been heading in the latter direction.&#0160;<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">&#0160;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.clausewitz.com\/\">Von Clausewitz<\/a> held that war is politics pursued by other means. But what could be called the C<em>onverse Clausewitz principle <\/em>holds equally: politics is war pursued by other means. See <a href=\"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2020\/07\/politics-as-polemics-the-converse-clausewitz-principle.html\">Politics as Polemics<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Given that we conservatives are at war with the Left, what are we to say about those who hover above the fray and <a href=\"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2020\/07\/which-side-are-you-on-.html\">refuse to take sides<\/a>? They are the political equivalentists, or near-equivalentists, who strive after an objective, non-partisan view and find fault with both sides.&#0160; What are are we to say about that sweet old lady, <a href=\"https:\/\/thebulwark.com\/bari-weiss-was-too-honest-for-the-new-york-times\/\">Mona Charen<\/a>, whom I have followed sympathetically for years?<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"the-content  \">\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story of Bari Weiss\u2019s tense parting with the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will doubtless provide several days\u2019 worth of fodder for the right. Weiss will become, for a while, a right-wing pin-up\u2014symbol of the dangerous cancel culture that Democrats want to impose on the whole nation. Andrew Sullivan announced on the same day that he is leaving <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine. Coming on the heels of other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/stan-wischnowski-resigns-philadelphia-inquirer-20200606.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prominent<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/07\/business\/media\/james-bennet-resigns-nytimes-op-ed.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> departures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from progressive standard bearers, the scent of purges is in the air.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the right has no credibility on this. If the left is woke, the right is bespoke\u2014it has become tailored around one person. Look at conservative publications and search for Trump critics. They are thin on the ground. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Review<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> parted ways with David French and Jonah Goldberg. The <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lost Bret Stephens and Bari Weiss. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fox News <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">staffed up with fulsome Trump <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/staff\/charles-hurt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enthusiasts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but dispensed with George Will\u2019s services.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">This narrowing of the American mind is making everyone dumber and nastier. Debate is practically dead. What Bari Weiss stands for is the individual conscience attempting to evaluate issues fairly. She stands for dispassionate analysis in a world that increasingly favors zealotry and intolerance. That\u2019s why her fate matters.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 12pt;\">Charen is as naive as <a href=\"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.typepad.com\/maverick_philosopher\/2020\/07\/sam-harris-and-the-problem-of-disagreement-is-conversation-our-only-hope.html\">Sam Harris<\/a>. She&#39;s a silly goose of a Never-Trumper living in the past.&#0160; Yes, my dear, debate is dead.&#0160; But why is that?
