Brion McClanahan writes:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">What is \u201cAmerican conservatism\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">[. . .]<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">But I know one thing that American conservatism is not: nationalism.<\/p>\n<p>That hasn\u2019t stopped modern American \u201cconservatives\u201d for hopping on that train.<\/p>\n<p>Trump bought a ticket and rode it to success in 2016.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">[. . .]<\/p>\n<p>In fact, most American \u201cconservatives\u201d have long identified with <em>decentralization<\/em>, not nationalism.<\/p>\n<p>For example, John C. Calhoun described himself as a \u201cconservative,\u201d and because he was a \u201cconservative\u201d he was a \u201cState\u2019s rights man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Translation: that means he wasn\u2019t an American \u201cnationalist.\u201d He was a \u201cUnionist\u201d but never a \u201cnationalist\u201d because Calhoun understood that an American \u201cnation\u201d by a traditional definition never existed.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino; font-size: 14pt;\">Here, as elsewhere, much depends on the definition of terms. McClanahan does not inform us as to the &quot;traditional definition&quot; of nationalism.&#0160; I am all for decentralization, limited government, states&#39; rights, and the Tenth Amendment.
