I have known this Turkish word for over ten years, but didn&#39;t note the connection between &#39;bo\u015f&#39; and &#39;bosh&#39; until I happened across the entry for the latter in Robert Hendrickson, <strong>QPB Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins<\/strong>, 2nd ed., p. 96. According to Hendrickson, &quot;The novelist <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/James_Justinian_Morier\"><font face=\"Georgia\">James Morier<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Georgia\"> introduced the word in a book about Turkish life published in 1834.&quot;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><font face=\"Georgia\">&#39;Coffee,&#39; &#39;kiosk,&#39; and &#39;divan&#39; are also on loan from Turkish corresponding as they do to <em>kahve<\/em>, <em>k\u00f6\u015fk<\/em>, and <em>divan<\/em>. <\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><font face=\"Georgia\">As interesting as facts like these are to me, it is more interesting that there are people who have no interest in them.<\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#39;Bosh,&#39; meaning nonsense, derives from the Turkish &#39;bo\u015f,&#39; which counts among its meanings: empty, hollow, vacant, futile, unfounded, ignorant and several others.
