{"id":11009,"date":"2011-01-12T12:28:31","date_gmt":"2011-01-12T12:28:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2011\/01\/12\/the-tucson-massacre-paul-krugman-et-al-continue-to-get-pounded\/"},"modified":"2011-01-12T12:28:31","modified_gmt":"2011-01-12T12:28:31","slug":"the-tucson-massacre-paul-krugman-et-al-continue-to-get-pounded","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2011\/01\/12\/the-tucson-massacre-paul-krugman-et-al-continue-to-get-pounded\/","title":{"rendered":"The Tucson Massacre:  Paul Krugman <i>et al.<\/i> Continue to Get Pounded"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">And <em>rightly<\/em> so:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pajamasmedia.com\/rogerkimball\/2011\/01\/09\/how-to-turn-a-tragedy-into-an-emetic\/\" target=\"_self\">Roger Kimball<\/a>:&#0160; <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Loughner\u2019s pistol was probably still warm when Krugman wheeled into print in an effort to make political capital out of the tragedy.&#0160; \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/krugman.blogs.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/08\/assassination-attempt-in-arizona\/\">Assassination Attempt in Arizona<\/a>\u201d should join that rogues\u2019 gallery of disgusting <em>Times<\/em> stories that wallow in the gutter of political innuendo and mendacity even as they preen themselves on their exhibition of holier-than-thou virtue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">The folks at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powerlineblog.com\/\">Powerline<\/a> instantly got to the crux of the matter with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powerlineblog.com\/archives\/2011\/01\/028096.php\">The Contemptible Krugman<\/a>, noting that he was among the first to \u201cseek political advantage from mass murder.\u201d Krugman\u2019s column, they show, belongs to the Lillian Hellman species of utterance as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/Lillian_Hellman\">described by Mary McCarthy<\/a>: everything he wrote is a lie, including&#0160;\u201cand\u201d and \u201cthe.\u201d \u201cWe don\u2019t have proof yet that this was political,\u201d Krugman begins,&#0160;&#0160;\u201cbut the odds are that it was.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2011\/01\/11\/AR2011011106068.html\" target=\"_self\">Charles Krauthammer<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Not only is there no evidence that Loughner was impelled to violence by any of those upon whom <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/10\/opinion\/10krugman.html?_r=1\">Paul Krugman<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/40981503\/ns\/msnbc_tv-countdown_with_keith_olbermann\/\">Keith Olbermann<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/10\/opinion\/10mon1.html\">the New York Times<\/a>, the Tucson sheriff and other rabid partisans are fixated. There is no evidence that he was responding to <em>anything<\/em>, political or otherwise, outside of his own head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">[. . .]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">. . . fighting and warfare are the most routine of political metaphors. And for obvious reasons. Historically speaking, all democratic politics is a sublimation of the ancient route to power &#8211; military conquest. That&#39;s why the language persists. That&#39;s why we say without any self-consciousness such things as &quot;battleground states&quot; or &quot;targeting&quot; opponents.
