{"id":10930,"date":"2011-02-15T12:44:39","date_gmt":"2011-02-15T12:44:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2011\/02\/15\/george-shearing-dead-at-91\/"},"modified":"2011-02-15T12:44:39","modified_gmt":"2011-02-15T12:44:39","slug":"george-shearing-dead-at-91","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2011\/02\/15\/george-shearing-dead-at-91\/","title":{"rendered":"George Shearing Dead at 91"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Kerouac aficionados&#0160;will &#0160;recall the&#0160;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jazzwax.com\/2007\/09\/old-god-shearin.html\" target=\"_self\">&quot;Old God Shearing&quot;<\/a> passage in&#0160;<em>On the Road<\/em> devoted to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/15\/arts\/music\/15shearing.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss\" target=\"_self\">the late <\/a>pianist George Shearing.&#0160; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tyS1FsUV__8&amp;feature=related\" target=\"_self\">Here<\/a> is a taste of his playing.&#0160; And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ud2MFp9CwZ8\" target=\"_self\">another<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">You will have noticed, astute reader that you are, that my opening sentence is ambiguous.&#0160; &#39;The late pianist George Shearing&#39; must be read <em>de re<\/em> for the sentence to be true, while my formulation suggests a <em>de dicto<\/em> reading.&#0160; Compare:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">a. The late George Shearing is such that that there is a passage in OTR about him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">b. There is a passage in OTR about the late George Shearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">(a) is plainly true and wholly unproblematic.&#0160; (b), however, is false in that there is no passage in OTR about George Shearing under the description &#39;late&#39; or &#39;deceased.&#39;&#0160; On the contrary, the passage in question depicts him as so exuberantly alive as to drive Dean Moriarty &#39;mad.&#39;&#0160; But is (b) <em>plainly<\/em> false?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">I suppose it depends on whether &#39;about&#39; is ambiguous in (b).&#0160; Can a passage that depicts x as F be about x even if x is not F?&#0160;Or must x be F if a passage that depicts x as F is correctly describable as about x?&#0160;My tentative view is that there are both uses in ordinary English.&#0160; Consequently, (b) is not<em> plainly <\/em>false.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Is&#0160;the definite description &#39;the man in the corner with champagne in his glass&#39;&#0160; about a man in the corner even if he does not have champagne in his glass but sparkling water&#0160; instead?&#0160; If you say &#39;yes,&#39; then you should agree that (b) is not plainly false, but ambiguous.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kerouac aficionados&#0160;will &#0160;recall the&#0160;&quot;Old God Shearing&quot; passage in&#0160;On the Road devoted to the late pianist George Shearing.&#0160; Here is a taste of his playing.&#0160; And another.
