{"id":10448,"date":"2011-08-15T13:52:50","date_gmt":"2011-08-15T13:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2011\/08\/15\/of-ether-lead-and-misattribution-2\/"},"modified":"2011-08-15T13:52:50","modified_gmt":"2011-08-15T13:52:50","slug":"of-ether-lead-and-misattribution-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maverickphilosopher.blog\/index.php\/2011\/08\/15\/of-ether-lead-and-misattribution-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Of Ether, Lead, and Misattribution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Those of us who pursue the ethereal should never forget that it is blood, iron, and lead that secure the spaces of tranquillity wherein we flourish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">I found the following in a gun forum:&#0160; \u201cPeople sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.\u201d It was attributed to George Orwell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">I don&#39;t know whether&#0160;Orwell wrote those exact words.&#0160; I rather doubt that he did.&#0160; But he did write, in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.george-orwell.org\/Notes_on_Nationalism\/0.html\" target=\"_self\">Notes on&#0160;Nationalism<\/a>, &quot;Those who &#39;abjure&#39; violence can only do so because others are committing violence on their behalf.&quot;&#0160; The thought is essentially the same, and a good and true thought it is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Pacifism is for angels.&#0160; But we are mixed and mixed-up beings, half animal, half angel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">You should never trust any unsourced&#0160;attribution you find on the Internet .<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">The following beautiful&#0160; line of Henry David Thoreau is routinely&#0160;misquoted:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">In wildness is the preservation of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: georgia,palatino;\">Again and again, people who cannot read what is on the page substitute &#39;wilderness&#39; for &#39;wildness.&#39; People see what they want to see, or expect to see.
